Permit โ€” Mandatory for All Visitors

A valid permit is required for every visitor without exception. Entry to the Rawdah is managed through a barcode (QR code) scanning system at the gate. Guards scan every permit with handheld devices. There is no entry without a valid QR code โ€” this applies regardless of how many times you have visited before, who you are, or what visa you hold.

Book through the Nusuk app (Hajj/Umrah visa holders) or Tawakalna app (Saudi residents, GCC nationals, other visas). Both apps are free. Booking is free. The permit is free. Anyone charging you for a permit is not operating through official channels.

Step-by-step Nusuk and Tawakalna booking โ€” with troubleshooting for when slots are not available

  • Save your QR code as a screenshot to your phone camera roll โ€” do not rely on the app alone
  • Bring the passport or ID that matches your permit โ€” guards may check
  • Arrive at the mosque 30 minutes before your slot, at your gate 15 minutes before entry
  • If your QR code does not scan โ€” increase screen brightness, use the screenshot, show booking email as backup

Dress Code โ€” Men and Women

Modest Islamic dress is required for entry to the Rawdah. Arrive already dressed correctly โ€” there are no changing facilities at the gate and you will not be permitted to change inside the mosque. Security guards check dress code at the entrance.

Rules Inside the Rawdah โ€” Behaviour and Etiquette

The rules inside the Rawdah exist for two reasons: practical management of a very small space containing millions of visitors annually, and spiritual protection of an atmosphere that has been sacred for 1,400 years. Understanding the why behind each rule helps you observe it with the right intention.

Children, Elderly Pilgrims and Wheelchair Users

Children

  • Children below approximately 10 years of age may enter with a parent holding a valid permit
  • Each adult may bring one young child โ€” the child does not need a separate permit
  • Children above the eligibility age require their own permit booked under their own ID or passport
  • If visiting with young children, book a quieter weekday morning slot โ€” post-Fajr is the most peaceful
  • Prepare children in advance โ€” the emotional intensity inside the Rawdah can overwhelm young children unexpectedly

Elderly pilgrims

  • Wheelchairs are available at multiple entrance gates โ€” no advance arrangement needed
  • The Rawdah floor is completely flat โ€” no steps or obstacles for wheelchair users
  • Inform a security guard at your gate if you or your companion has mobility needs โ€” accessible routes and priority arrangements are available
  • Saudi authorities have implemented dedicated elderly support services including multilingual staff
  • If standing in the queue is difficult, speak to any guard โ€” they are trained to accommodate

Menstruating women

  • A woman who is menstruating may enter Masjid Nabawi and make dua in the Rawdah
  • Salah (prayer) should not be performed while in this state โ€” but dua is not restricted
  • The majority scholarly position permits entry to the mosque for menstruating women in cases of need
  • Do not let this prevent a valid permitted visit โ€” make your duas, send salawat, and leave peacefully

Dos and Don’ts โ€” Quick Reference

โœ…   DO

โœ“ Book your permit in advance on Nusuk or Tawakalna

โœ“ Show QR code with screen brightness on maximum

โœ“ Pray two rakah nafl if space allows

โœ“ Make dua in any language โ€” Arabic, Urdu, English, any

โœ“ Move calmly and follow guard directions

โœ“ Cancel your permit if you cannot attend

โœ“ Lower your gaze and be fully presentโœ“ Send salam at the Noble Chamber after leaving

โŒ  DO NOT

โœ— Take photos or videos inside

โœ— Speak loudly or make phone calls

โœ— Use strong perfume โ€” it disturbs others

โœ— Push, rush or ignore guard instructions

โœ— Spend time looking around instead of making dua

โœ— Bring large bags or unnecessary items

โœ— Arrive without wudhu

โœ— Miss your slot without cancelling in the app

โœ— Try to stay beyond your allocated 10 minutes

The Adab (Etiquette) of the Rawdah โ€” Why It Matters

In Islam, adab (etiquette and proper conduct) is not separate from worship โ€” it is worship. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: ‘I was sent to perfect good character.’ Observing the rules of the Rawdah is not bureaucratic compliance โ€” it is an expression of reverence for the Prophet ๏ทบ, respect for fellow pilgrims, and the highest form of adab towards Allah.

Every rule in the Rawdah has a spiritual root. The prohibition on photography is about presence โ€” being where your body is, fully. The rule on lowering your voice comes from Quranic guidance on how to address Allah (Quran 7:55). The time limit exists because your generosity in leaving when called is an act of ibadah for the person waiting outside. Even the dress code is an expression of meeting the Prophet ๏ทบ in his sacred space โ€” you dress for the occasion.

Leave the Rawdah as a better Muslim than you entered. That is the only measure of a successful visit that matters.
